Improved Chameleon Documentation for Community Server 2008

The updates to the official documentation sites are still a little way out, so, in the meantime, I've gotten permission to post the new, improved Chameleon control documentation on this site.

Here it is: CS2008 Chameleon Documentation

The new Chameleon documentation merges the old CHM download file and property documentation (along with some additional information and assumptions) to provide a single, integrated, searchable, control-based reference for all Chameleon controls in CS2008. It also provides direct access to QueryOverrides information for list controls (which was previously difficult to find) and helpful "see also" links.

Let me know what you think. Questions? Issues? Suggestions?

Ben,

Are you going to release an off-line version of the documentation, a .chm file, like the one you released for the previous version of Chameleon controls for Community Server v2007?

George J -- There will probably not be an offline version of this documentation, although it should be possible to regenerate the CHM file from the SDK using Sandcastle.

Ben, I'm glad to see the improvements, thank you.

For feedback I have a couple points:

- Documentation should have samples showing the concepts in action. If there are any samples I can't see them listed in these docs.

- There only overview or explanations in context of Chameleon are based on old CS versions. If these old blog articles or videos still apply, why can't they clearly be marked: "Applies to CS 2008" ? That way we know what to dig into and what is out of date.

Greetings -- The examples for each of the controls are generated if there is not an example defined in the source code. I've since added specific examples for each of the pager controls and a few of the utility controls. More examples will come as time passes... luckily this way of implementing the documentation makes it very easy to add examples and keep the examples up-to-date with future releases of CommunityServer.

Regarding the overview documents... agreed. The existing "Introduction to Chameleon" posts do still apply to CS2008. The new Chameleon documentation will hopefully be moved to one of the upcoming official documentation sites for Community Server -- at that time, the overview documents will relate more directly (and exclusively) to CS2008.
